How the Ford Model T revolutionised the car industry

Itís easy to forget sometimes just how quickly things have changed over the past 100 years. When it comes to buying a car, we have never had as many options available. Mass produced at factories all across the globe, there is no shortage of affordable cars on offer. But when the car was first becoming a viable transport option, they were often prohibitively expensive and the idea of just anyone being able to purchase one was impossible. That is until Henry†Ford and the Ford Model T

The concept behind the car was simple. Mass produced on assembly lines, the cars would be a combination of high quality engineering and construction with materials and production costs that would make the car affordable. Ford himself said, ďIt will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one.Ē

The key innovation by Ford was the use of assembly lines. Not only did the use of assembly lines reduce the amount of expertise each engineer needed to be able to work on producing the car, it also drastically reduced the amount of time needed to construct one. Before it was fully optimised, the building process of the Model T required 12.5 hours to produce. Four years after the carís launch, this was reduced to just 93 minutes.

The sheer number of cars built is astonishing. By 1925, just ten years after the carís launch, 15 million Model Ts had†been manufactured. Incredible when you think of the lack of technology they had back then. The sheer number meant that Ford had no need to advertise their cars. They were so common and affordable, that the cars sold themselves.†

The Model T proved that cars could be accessible to everyone. It was the first car that was affordable to the mechanics and engineers who produced it, incredible when you think of it. Without the Model T, the car may well have become as popular as it is today. But you cannot deny that Ford made the possibility of owning a car accessible to everyone.
