How to choose the best car insurance for you

With so many different companies and options available to you, finding the right type of car insurance for your needs may seem a little complicated. But there’s no need to be confused. All it takes is a little understanding of your car, your usage and what you need.

What do you use your car for?

When you fill out a form for your car insurance, you will be asked what you use your car for. This is normally described as social domestic pleasure, commuting, both, or for work. These three options are important, as they give the insurer an idea of what you will be using your car for. Most of us will be in the third category, where we use the car on a daily basis. But if you have more than one car in the household, or travel a lot for work, you may fall in a different category. For an accurate quote you will need to choose the right category.

You will also want to try and be accurate with your annual mileage, as this can also affect your quote.

What sort of cover do you want?

There are three types of insurance available – third party, third party fire and theft, or fully comprehensive. As a minimum, you need to have the third party cover. This will pay for any damage that you may cause in an incident with another car that was your fault. The second option also covers your car if it’s stolen or damaged in a fire – pretty self-explanatory. Fully comprehensive is the most expensive of the options, and will fully protect your car from damage or theft, including damage from uninsured drivers. This option is generally the most expensive of the three, best suited for newer cars that would be expensive to pay for repairs.

Use a comparison site and shop around

Price comparison sites are still generally the best place to get the best quote. While some major providers don’t appear on these sites, it is still the easiest way to get a variety of quotes that provide different options and extras. And if you do want to get a quote from one of the larger providers that aren’t on comparison sites, you won’t have to fill out a hundred different forms to get a variety of quotes.
