Most Christmassy towns in Britain

Tis the season to be jolly, and many of us are well and truly in the mood for some festive cheer to end the year. But where are the best places to go to find some Christmas spirit? We’ve put together a list of the five most tinsel-covered towns that would make for an ideal road trip this Christmas.

Bath

The historic town of Bath looks like something out of a Charles Dicken’s novel. Hopefully you will find it to be more of “A Christmas Carol” than a “Bleak House”. While exploring the ancient streets, pay a visit to its famous Christmas market, with over 200 stalls filled with arts, crafts and festive goodies. Perfect for finding an unusual Christmas gift.

London

For sheer variety of Christmas activities, visiting the nation’s capital is still the number one destination. Christmas lights? A visit to the famous Oxford Street provides some of the best illuminations in the country. Father Christmas? Harrods has a fine Santa’s Grotto that is well worth the wait. Ice skating at Somerset House, Winter Wonderland, and the Christmas market on the South Bank of the Thames, there is so much to discover you’ll need a few days to see it all.

Edinburgh

Up in Scotland, Edinburgh has the cold wintry weather and a festive atmosphere that’s difficult to beat. With some fantastic Christmas lights, a wide variety of celebrations, and Edinburgh castle all making for a fantastic festive retreat. And if you are after something to do on December 31st, Hogmanay is one of the best ways to see in the new year.

Birmingham

For those after a more Bavarian Christmas experience, a visit to Birmingham will give you all the gluhwein you can wish for. The biggest German Christmas market outside Germany and Austria will give you an authentic taste of ‘Weihnacht’. Expect festive pastries, lots of bratwurst and plenty of beer and wine to make you merry.

Belfast

Across the Irish Sea, Belfast transforms itself each year, celebrating all things wonderful about Christmas and Europe. Belgian chocolates, French cheese, German sausages, all can be found at the famous City Hall. An ideal way to get a flavour of how Christmas is celebrated across the continent.
