US Government expands Toyota probe
The US Government's investigation of fires that can start in various Toyota vehicles has been extended to include reports on a further 600,000 Camrys and other cars.
This takes the number of cars and SUVs made between 2007-2009 that are being investigated to 1.4 million.
The investigation started in February and included more than 800,000 Camrys and RAV4 SUVs from 2007.
Also now included in the investigation are some 2008-2009 era Camrys, some 2007-2009 era Yaris subcompacts and the entire line of 2008 Highlander Hybrid SUVs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They said the cars were made between September 2006 and August 2008.
There have been 161 complaints made to Toyota and the Government regarding fires in the vehicles and nine people have been injured.
The US Government said that the switch for driver's electric window seat door can sometimes overheat and lead to a blaze and a mechanical breakdown.
The investigation was also upgraded by NHTSA to something known as an engineering analysis, so the car models in question could be recalled.
