Volkswagen Unleashes Winter Tyre Program

Volkswagen has kicked off a winter tyre programme that offers customers an affordable method of ensuring that they have the right kind of tyres on their cars for the season they are in.

"The message that we want to get across is that you don't need snow to make the most of winter tyres," says Eric Ekins, Parts Marketing Manager of Volkswagen UK. "In fact, once the mercury hits seven degrees Celsius or below, winter tyres tend to outperform their summer counterparts with greater grip for acceleration, cornering and braking."

Statistics from the Met Office prove that the average temperature of winter months in the United Kingdom is below six degrees Celsius, a point at which winter tyres offer real advantages in terms of safety over their summer equivalents, making them just as much of a necessity for car owners as a good Vehicle Warranty

Winter tyres make use of a rubber compound, which is designed to be at its best at temperatures beneath seven degrees Celsius.  While the compound in ordinary tyres tends to stiffen when at lower temperatures, winter tyres remain considerably softer and are therefore better equipped to maintain grip.  A special kind of tread design also helps to optimise the displacement of water, while additional grooves/sipes likewise assists with traction.

Winter tyres can be ordered for models from the Phaeton to the Volkswagen Polo via Volkswagen dealers, with tyre sets ranging in size from as low as 15 inches to 19 inches.
