Biggest myths about buying a car

When it comes to buying a car, there are a lot of different factors to consider. This can make the process a little daunting, especially if you are not a devoted petrolhead who knows the difference between a V6 and a VW. But all it takes is a bit of knowledge to help settle the car buying nerves. So here are some of the biggest myths about buying a car.

Buying online is always best

The internet has changed car buying dramatically over the last few decades. You can now put your exact requirements into a search engine and find your ideal car. But buying online has its drawbacks. You might not be able to have a look at the car in advance, and the photos posted online can be misleading.

Cash is always the best option

Buying a car outright with cash is often seen as the best option, just get it done and out of the way immediately. But, cars are not cheap, especially newer ones, so paying with cash can leave you out of pocket. Sometimes a finance option might be better. At the end of the day, itís down to what suits your circumstances best.

Buy a car on a rainy day

This is an old myth, and focuses more on car dealerships (especially used cars). On a rainy day, there is supposed to be less people around, meaning the dealer will be more keen to make you a good deal. But rain can also hide a carís condition, and most dealers nowadays will not be so susceptible to the weather.

Donít mention the trade-in straight away

If you are thinking of part exchanging your old car for your new one, you may be tempted to keep the information to yourself. The idea was that the dealer would make you a great deal thinking youíre buying it outright, only to be caught by surprise when you use a trade-in to lower the price further. Dealers are not so gullible and will often ask you up front if you want to part exchange.†
