Birmingham remains motor fraud 'hotspot' Image

Birmingham has been confirmed as Britain's worst area for motor fraud in Keoghs' annual Motor Fraud Index.

The Midlands city came out on top in the specialist law firm's top 10 hotspots in England and Wales for the fourth year in a row.

As many as 7.76% of all suspect motor insurance claimants came from Birmingham. East London accounted for 4.22%, Liverpool for 4.03%, and Manchester for 3.75%.

Keoghs was handed more than 24,000 cases of suspected fraudulent claims last year.

It found a 260% rise in dodgy claims in Crewe from 2011, while Medway in Kent recorded an increase of 145%, and Leicester 58%.

Across the regions, Wales and the South West posted the biggest rise, with suspect claims up 49% on the back of a significant increase in fraud ring-related activity and staged accidents. This saw Cardiff become a fraud black spot.

The index also pointed to fraud branching out since 2009. Only 12 out of 104 postcode areas in Britain are now classed as relatively low risk, representing a considerable rise in the spread of motor fraud in recent years.
