Braking technology cuts insurance costs

Mazda CX-5 owners will now get cheaper insurance thanks to the company's investment in 'active' safety technology.

The compact SUV is the first of the Japanese manufacturer's cars to feature the company's SKYACTIV technologies.

This includes the 'Smart City Brake Support' (SCBS) system, an automatic emergency breaking system that uses radar sensors to monitor the distance and speed of the vehicle in front.

The SCBS system applies the cars brakes if it detects that a crash is imminent and the driver hasn't reacted, hopefully preventing a crash or reducing its severity.

Due to the braking system, which is fitted as standard across the range, the Association of British Insurers has lowered the insurance group rating of all Mazda CX-5 models.

Aftersales director of Mazda UK, David Wilson-Green, said: "Although any change in premium depends on many factors that insurers evaluate, even a small reduction in group rating has the potential to cut insurance costs."

"We anticipate that the lowered group ratings for CX-5 could result in annual savings up to 50 on some models for our customers."

The SCBS system works best when there is a speed difference of less than 19 mph between the two vehicles.
