Mercedes-Benz is to make its service plans available to some of its older models and Smart cars.

By axing the seven year age restriction on its Service Care range, the brand hopes to boost workshop volumes.

Mercedes-Benz and Smart owners took out over 40,000 Service Care plans in 2012, while more than 10,000 of the 97,000 new Mercedes and Smart cars sold during the year were purchased with a service plan.

The number of new models and Smart cars bought with a service plan last year is over 50% higher compared to the figure recorded in 2011.

C-Class customers accounted for almost 14,000 of the total Service Care plans sold, while 45% of plans bought covered the next three consecutive services.

Customers buying two services can spread the cost over 12 or 24 months, while those purchasing three services that can be spread payment over 12, 24 or 36 months. People who want to buy four services can be spread the cost over 12, 24, 36 or 48 months.

In addition, customers can pay a single, up-front payment if they prefer.
