Millionth uninsured car seized

More than a million cars have been seized since the launch of a campaign to crack down on motorists driving without insurance.

The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) announced that police had seized the millionth car since the scheme was first launched in 2005.

Since the police were given powers to stop vehicles identified through licence plate recognition technology as being uninsured, an average of 500 vehicles have been seized each day and around 30% of these went on to be crushed, according to figures from the MIB.

While car insurance can be expensive, campaigners say there is no excuse for motorists driving without insurance.

Drivers can protect themselves against the cost of repair, parts and labour with a Car Warranty, allowing them to save for an insurance deal.

AA Insurance director Simon Douglas said: "A million cars seized is great news, yet there are still an estimated 1.2 million vehicles on Britain's roads being driven without cover. That's around one out of every 25.

"The MIB, which provides compensation to innocent victims involved in collisions with uninsured drivers and drivers who fail to stop, is doing great work with the police and community leaders to get through to persistent offenders.

"But we are still a long way from cleaning up Britain's roads."
