More than 150,000 cars in the UK are being recalled by their manufacturer due to potential problems with passenger airbags.

Four Japanese car makers are recalling more than 152,351 cars on Britain's roads after discovering a problem with the passenger airbag inflator, which can burst and scatter pieces of plastic.

Toyota has called back 76,000 vehicles bought on British soil between November 2000 and March 2004, primarily involving the Corolla and Yaris.

Nissan has hauled back 59,038 of its models sold in the UK between 2000 and 2004, including the Almera, Navara, Patrol and X-Trail vehicles.

Honda has ordered the return of 15,400 vehicles purchased on British forecourts between 2001 and 2004, involving its Civic, the CRV and the FRV.

Some 1,913 Mazda 6's purchased in the UK between 2002 and 2003 have also been called back in relation to the same complaint.

The moves follow five separate incidents involving vehicles in the USA and Japan, sparking Toyota, Honda and Nissan to recall more than two million vehicles worldwide.
