New research has revealed that the total number of 4x4s sold in the UK has risen year-on-year in the second quarter of 2012.

The figures, which come from the global information services firm Experian, show that the volume of 4x4s sold increased by 5% compared to the second quarter of 2011, while sales in most other areas declined.

The latest Used Car Index indicated that the number of used cars sold between April and June fell from 1,761,916 in 2011 to 1,726,627 this year and sales of electric models, which have risen consistently in recent years, fell by 15.9%.

The hybrid sector, in which the most popular model is the Toyota Prius, featured a 47.3% increase in the number of units sold compared to 2011 though and sales of superminis like the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta also rose by 0.8%.

Petrol cars remain dominant overall as they account for 68% of all cars sold and, as in the first quarter of 2012, the Ford Focus was the best-selling used car with more than 75,000 vehicles sold between April and June.
