Ford fire probe spreads to Europe

Ford fire probe spreads to Europe Image

Ford's investigation into engine fires has now been extended to Europe.

The car maker recalled more than 89,000 new Escape SUVs and Fusion saloons in North America last week due to a risk of the engines overheating and catching fire.

Drivers of those models were told by Ford to stop driving them and instead use loan cars from dealerships until the issue has been resolved.

The automotive giant said it had received 13 reports of fires across Escape SUVs and Fusion saloons.

It has now extended its probe into Europe after seven cases were identified involving its 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that is used in the Ford Focus, Mondeo and Galaxy.

No European vehicles have so far been recalled by Ford in Europe due to the engine fires problem. The company has not yet identified the cause.
