Is It Possible To Transfer An Auto Warranty

Is It Possible To Transfer An Auto Warranty Image

One question that buyers and sellers frequently ask is what happens with an auto warranty when the owner chooses to sell the car.  Can the auto warranty be transferred to a new owner?  While this is not possible in many cases, there are a few situations in which the warranty may be transferred along with the ownership of the vehicle.  The trick is to identify when this is possible and when it is not.

Depending on the terms of the warranty involved, it may be possible to transfer a warranty when selling a used car.  This is particularly true with warranties that are issued as used Car Warranties in the first place.  Typically, there is a specific process necessary to make this happen and it must take place within a limited amount of time after the car title is transferred to the new owner.  Should the warranty transfer not be submitted within the specified time frame, the cover is not longer subject to transfer and the new owner will have to find his or her own warranty coverage.

Before making any assumptions about the ability to transfer the auto warranty, talk with the auto warranty provider and determine if the cover can be transferred and what steps are necessary to make that happen.  Keep in mind that even if it is not possible to transfer the cover, the provider may be willing to establish a used Car Warranty agreement with the new owner, if the car in question meets the standards set by that particular warranty provider.
