Motor industry prepares for years biggest registration month

Motor industry prepares for years biggest registration month Image

New 12-plate vehicles are set to go on sale this week while the motor industry revs up for what is traditionally its busiest month of the year.  The industry body known as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (also sometimes referred to simply as SMMT) predicts that about 350,000 new cars will be registered during the course of next month, with motorists to spend almost £5 billion on the latest vehicles.

March is the biggest month for automotive dealers across the United Kingdom, accounting for around a fifth of the trade for the whole year, with September - the other plate change month - traditionally being the second busiest.  Over 300 models packed with technology are on the market at the moment, representing one of the largest choices ever for motorists in the United Kingdom.

"The March market holds a great deal of significance for the UK 's franchised dealer network, motorists and the wider economy" says the Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Peter Everitt.  "More than 350,000 vehicles will be registered in the month with private motorists and business buyers capitalising on the ever increasing levels of fuel efficiency, safety, comfort and practicality of today's vehicles."

The industry body, Motor Codes, operates a Code of Practice for new cars that is backed by the British government and covers more than 99% of new vehicles sold in the United Kingdom, regulating such things as advertising, sales and Motor Warranties.
