New tyre rules may catch out UK drivers

A new study has revealed that the majority of drivers in the UK are not aware of the new EU tyre labelling regulations to be introduced in a couple of months.

The survey, which was carried out by OnePoll, found that more than 70% of motorists are not familiar with the new rules that are due to come into force on November 1 and as many as 99% really underestimate the impact that tyres have on fuel bills.

The research was commissioned by rubber producer Lanxess, which is launching a free app to show that changing tyres can save people roughly 200 per year in petrol costs (based on an annual 10,000 miles at 35mpg and paying 1.30 per litre).

Tyre and fast fit specialist HiQ is also raising awareness of the benefits of the new legislation with a brand new 'Tyre Labelling World' section on its website and Geraldine McGovern, HiQ create demand manager, says drivers should take a look.

"With the legislation just 50 days away, we want to be seen as industry leaders on this topic and the first port of call for any motorist wishing to understand more," she said.

The site features various different downloads, including 'The anatomy of a tyre label', 'HiQ handy guide to Tyre Labelling' and 'Winter tyres and Tyre Labelling', which may prove useful for those that aren't aware of what the rules might mean for them.

The 3,000-strong survey demonstrates that there is a significant knowledge gap when it comes to tyres, and the effect that they can have in terms of mechanical breakdowns, fuel costs, Car Warranty and in other areas as well.
