Profile of the Mazda MX Five

One of the most distinctive cars on the road, the Mazda MX-5 is the best selling roadster on the planet. Famous for its stylish design, smooth drive, and affordable price, this lightweight coupe is rightly regarded as one of the best cars on the market.

History

Currently in its fourth generation, the first MX-5 was launched back in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. Available in both hardtop and soft top, the car was a huge success. Two more iterations were launched (2001 and 2008) before the most recent edition was launched in 2015. The Guinness Book of Records has the MX-5 as the bestselling two seater sports car in history.

Fourth generation

The latest version was launched in September 2014, with the cars going on sale in 2015. Highly anticipated, the car was built to retain the vehicle’s distinctive design but with a modern twist provided by KODO Design.

Mazda stated they wanted to go back to their roots for this edition. Because the MX-5 is so loved by car enthusiasts, they were careful to improve the famous car, more than completely revamp. Combining an excellent agile feel with thrilling rear wheel drive, the latest edition was greeted with enthusiasm. It feels like you are driving a sports car, comparable to those in six figures. Instead, this will set you back less than £30k, with older models still hugely popular on the second hand market.

The car’s success helped push the car into selling over 1,000,000 units, a record yet to be matched. Its combination of affordable price and sports car styling has made it a huge success.

What the experts say

Auto Express: ‘The Mazda MX-5 roadster is legendary small sports car that provides thrills on a budget’

Top Gear magazine: ‘A complete sweetie of a roadster, this is the best the MX-5 has been perhaps ever.’

Telegraph cars: ‘The Mazda MX-5 harks back to a simpler time when power wasn’t the be-all-and-end-all. But this doesn’t mean it feels old fashioned; indeed, it’s a truckload more fun than any roadster this side of £30,000.’
