Renault Axes UK Cars and Dealers

Renault Axes UK Cars and Dealers Image

Renault is reducing its dealer count in the United Kingdom from 190 to 135 and cutting five models from its line up in a bid to turn around its unprofitable division in this country.  The cuts will kick off in February of next year, and will see the company then focus on its four core models - Clio, Megane, Scenic and Twingo.

Models that are to be cut from the range include the Espace, Kangoo, Laguna, Modus and Wind, all of which are slow sellers that make up barely 10% of the overall United Kingdom volume of the brand.  The Wind was launched only 18 months ago, although the Laguna has been on sale for 18 years since 1993 and the trend-setting Espace has been one of the company's most well known models.

The axed vehicles will continue to be on sale throughout Europe, where they are much more popular than is the case in the United Kingdom.  Renault is also stressing that that the Kangoo van range will continue to be available in the UK, even as the Kangoo car is removed from sale.  The company is also slashing its dealer network by as much as 30%, with the brand having sold 26,000 fewer cars in 2011 than it did last year.

Renault is fighting back, however, with a 100,000-mile, four-year Car Warranty as well as four years worth of servicing breakdown cover and finance, for the purpose of creating a "Four+" value package.
