Theory test should cover winter tyres

Theory test should cover winter tyres Image

Over the last few years demand for winter tyres at Kwik Fit has quadrupled, the company announced alongside results of research on winter tyre use.

The car-servicing company found that few UK motorists purchase season specific tyres.

According to its research 68% of drivers do not know the differences between cold and warm weather tyres, while 23% have not heard of winter tyres.

Kwik Fit is calling for the Government to update the driving theory to cover winter tyres in order to combat the lack awareness.

Learner drivers are asked 50 questions from a pool of almost 1,000 when they sit the Driving Standards Agency Theory Test, but, despite the safety benefits, none of them cover the issue of winter tyres.

Director of communications at Kwik Fit, Roger Griggs said: "With more countries making winter tyres compulsory, and an increasing number of drivers switching to winter tyres in the UK, they are becoming a much more common feature of winter driving, and therefore should be part of the theory test."
