Top 6 Fastest Hatchbacks in The UK

When it comes to the cars we drive, we often have to be practical above everything else. Does the car have enough seats for everyone using it? Is it small enough to park comfortably in town or on the driveway? Can I get all the shopping I need in the boot? There’s little surprise that the hatchback is the most popular type of car on the market. But it doesn’t mean you have to choose a slow car. Here are the fastest hatchbacks on the market.

Ford Focus RS

The RS version of the Ford Focus takes the popular hatchback and gives it an injection of pace and power. Four-wheel drive is a standard as it needs that extra grip to help the car control the power it possesses. The car goes from 0-60 in just 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 165mph.

Renault Megane RS 275

Not only is this French speed freak one of the most affordable fast hatchbacks on the market, but it’s also one of the best looking on the market. It’s almost as if the speed of the car has altered its shape so it looks more like the performance car its engine belongs in. The 276bhp, 1.8-litre turbocharged engine gives this hatchback some real oomph.

Volkswagen Golf GTI

For many drivers who prized speed over everything else, the Volkswagen Golf was the first car of choice. With a powerful engine and a compact size, it made every young driver feel like Schumacher, if only for a little while. The Golf GTI is the turbocharged big brother, can reach speeds of up to 155mph, and while its not as nippy as some other fast hatchbacks, its handling and styling makes it a cut above.

SEAT Leon Cupra

Another affordable speedster, the SEAT Leon Cupra combines interior comfort with a high level of performance. Based on its cousin the Golf GTI, the Leon Cupra somehow manages to wring an extra 60 hp out of its 2.0-litre engine, going up to a total of 300bhp. Its lowered suspension makes attacking turns a joy, and the driving modes mean you can change it up depending on who is in the car or where you are driving.

Vauxhall Astra VXR Nurburgring

The clue to this being one of the fastest hatchbacks on the road is its name – Nurburgring. The famous German race track has long been the proving ground of cars of all shapes and sizes. And the Astra VXR Nurburgring model can tackle the circuit in 8:35, making it one of the fastest models on the market.

Honda Civic Type-R

Quite possibly the most famous of all the fast hatchbacks, the Civic Type-R has been beloved by boy racers and regular drivers who want that little bit of kick every now and then. Its engine can rev up to a staggering 7000rpm,  giving the car an official top speed of 169mph. When you put your foot down, you really feel it. Whether it’s tearing up the tarmac on the motorway or taking advantage of its size in city driving, the Type-R is the connoisseur’s choice.
