Understanding the Terms of Your Auto Warranty

Understanding the Terms of Your Auto Warranty Image

Depending on how your auto warranty is structured, reading and understanding the benefits, as well as your rights and responsibilities, can be somewhat difficult.  Unfortunately, many consumers choose to simply slide the warranty contract into a file and forget about it until some event takes place that they think should be covered under the warranty terms.  This approach can lead to a lot of frustration as well as costing a fair amount of money.

Take the time to read your auto warranty carefully.  One strategy is to keep a notepad and pen nearby while you read through the warranty.  Make a note of any questions you have as they come to mind, since there is a good chance that later sections of the contract will include the information you need to answer those questions.  As you find the answers, take a moment to strike through the question.

At the end of this exercise, you will be able to see if there are any lingering questions about the coverage provided by the auto warranty, and what you have to do in order to keep the warranty current.  Contact the dealer or company that sold the warranty plan to you, and get some answers to those questions.  If possible, have them confirmed in a written format and keep a hard copy with your warranty agreement.  This will make it easier for you to get the most from the plan, and always know what benefits you do and do not have under the terms of the warranty plan you selected.
